Liza Smeeton

Location: Beeley   /  Genre: Mixed Media Textile Art

Artist Statement

Liza is a mixed media textile artist, creating textile art inspired by the colours, patterns and textures found in nature. She likes to create her own background fabrics, by printing, machine felting or hand dyeing her fabric and then uses hand and machine embroidery to create layers of texture, adding beads, buttons and found objects where needed.
Alongside her University work she is currently creating small embroidered 'Lichen Gardens' and finding ways to present her work in vintage tins and boxes.
Liza is currently in her second year of a Textiles Degree at Huddersfield University, specialising in embroidery.
She regularly posts images of work in progress via her Instagram page @handmade_by_lizas
Liza belongs to Ecostitchers, an exhibiting group of 5 textile artists based in and around the Peak District, who produce a wide variety of high quality and innovative textile art exploring environmental and climate change. As Ecostitichers, the group tries to work in as environmentally conscious and sustainable way as possible, using materials they already have, repurposing, reusing, recycling and sharing amongst the group rather than simply buying new. Each member working independently, inspired by a theme chosen for the year.
