Location: Tideswell   /  Genre: Sculptural Textiles

Artist Statement

Intricate woven sculptural textile-based pieces, created in response to natural and found objects, using a range of techniques and large proportion of hand-spun and naturally dyed wool.
My love of walking takes me to many beautiful places, hills, forests, moorland, seashores, rivers etc. Whilst walking, I have natural tendency to pick up and put in my pocket objects that catch my eye, including leaves, stones, twigs, driftwood, shells, feathers etc. I then enjoy working with these as materials… maybe a piece of wood which has broken off in the wind, drifted into the sea for a couple of months and landed on a beach. I like to journey alongside it for a while, creating ways to weave my hand-spun in and around it, playing with the shapes, choosing colours and textures that I feel bring out its distinct character. The end results are as varied as the objects themselves.
During the Open Arts weekend I will be giving demonstrations of spinning, weaving and coiled basketry.
