Victoria Reynolds

Location: Ashbourne   /  Genre: Painting

Artist Statement

Victoria's evocative work expresses her fascination with wild locations. Having lived and practised in a number of counties in England and Wales she seeks to harness the emotive value of memory and its reference to place. Although personal to the artist her paintings possess a symbolic quality that resonates with the viewer.
Evolving from direct observation, these pieces become more intuitive as they progress; an attempt to capture the moment, the diversity of the elements, a shift in atmosphere and light.
Works on paper follow a specific formula. Water based pigments may be diluted by sea or river so that the outcome evolves from the landscape itself. Collage may also be integrated in order to explore different qualities of surface, echoing the physicality of the environment. At other times acrylic is simply laid down on canvas allowing impasto and glazing techniques to be exploited.
The artist was born in Oxford, where she gained her BA (Hons) in fine art and publishing, followed by an MA in illustration at Brighton. This journey underpinned the fluid boundaries between the disciplines, but her obsession always remained with the land and sea.
Her career has encompassed working commercially, teaching in art education and exhibiting widely, including in a number of London galleries.
Victoria now lives and practises in Derbyshire, where she is inspired by the atmosphere of the dales and peaks. She also continues to paint the coast whenever she can.
