Artist Statement

I first studied ceramics O’ level at school a good number of years ago and re discovered my love of clay in 2019.

Solitary Bee Ceramics was born during the first Covid 19 lockdown in 2020 when the ceramics workshop I had been attending had to close due to Covid restrictions.

At the start of lockdown I managed to buy a potters wheel and a small kiln and turned my garage into a studio, the initial idea was to give me something to occupy my time during lockdown however as time progressed I realised that I would like to produce and sell my work.

My current work is created using either the potter’s wheel or by hand building with clay slabs around formers or by using simple plaster hump moulds and I consider that my pieces perform a dual role of function and decoration.

Nature is a common influence in the work of many artists and the same is true for me. I take inspiration from the natural world around me, the changing seasons, the landscape around me and from the elements.

My love of surface decoration is evident and I enjoy finding a balance in my work using texture, and with stamped designs. I use oxides and food safe glazes to enhance decoration and texture.

I also enjoy incorporating other materials such as drift wood, upcycled wood and metal into some of my finished pieces.
