Peter Nelson

Location: New Mills   /  Genre: Woodturning

Artist Statement

In his twenties Peter worked in the family tourist business in South West Scotland. It was during this time that he developed an interest in woodturning and a glimpse of images in a glossy magazine sparked an interest which was to last a lifetime.
The family business was sold and Peter moved with his family to Derbyshire where he worked for a major woodturning supplier and later a specialist sawmill. The experience gained has given him a unique insight and understanding of woodturning. He has given tuition helping many to develop their skills. His work has been sold through many retail outlets and is now available exclusively through his website and at Gallery in the Gardens, Buxton.
Peter uses mostly native timber sourced locally from tree surgeons and private landowners. Many trees are felled due to disease or for safety. From this material he lovingly creates bowls both to use and cherish. Texture, scorching and colour are often in evidence and his forms follow the narrative of ancient civilisations with a modern twist.
