Artist Statement

I am Julia, a mixed media artist working from my little green ‘shedio’ in the garden. I work in a wide variety of different media, but gelli printing forms the basis for almost everything I do – from original monotype prints to the collage papers in my paintings.
Mixed media painting is an exciting part of my art work and I’m looking forward to seeing where my experimentation will take me next. Working on board and paper I’ve developed a semi-abstract, layered technique using acrylic paint and my own gelli printed collage papers. I then work into these layers with crayons, pens and other mixed media for detail. My work is continually inspired by my local area or inspiring places I have visited. I’m a sucker for a rocky beach or sweeping path.
Gelli printing is a fun and easy mono-printing technique. It uses a synthetic gelatine plate to transfer the details of textures and images pressed into the surface in thin layers of acrylic paint. There are so many different effects you can achieve and I’m still learning all the time. I use the technique to create original botanical monotype prints and the many collage papers for my paintings.
I run workshops at the Long Eaton Art Room where you can come and learn some of these techniques with me.
