Artist Statement

Lin is an abstract artist who creates exciting, dramatic abstract art for the imagination. Her work is available to buy from two galleries in the UK and directly from her via her website. Her paintings can be found in private collections in the UK, USA, France and Ireland.
Lin runs an international annual course called Directions in Abstraction and a coaching and mentoring group. In 2023 she wrote a book on sketchbook practice called Creative Connections: A 30 Day Sketchbook Challenge with two further volumes planned.
I make abstract, gestural, mixed media and oil paintings with structural elements, forms and line. I am principally concerned with the physicality of paint, the excitement of spontaneous mark making and the interaction between surface and materials.
When I immerse myself in the experience of painting I am driven by a spirit of curiosity and guided by an internal sense of questioning and excitement. Each painting evolves in the moment through unfolding interactions with the surface, the materials and the mood or energy I encounter; this might be uncertainty, struggle, friction, excitement or joy. I pay close attention to internal experience and I follow impulses that want to be expressed through colour and mark-making. Which means a painting’s form will emerge from this process of experiment, discovery and my relationship with the materials. Hence the work emerges from a state of mind where I am engaged in this direct relationship with my immediate experience, and sharing this with the viewer.
